So I am working on an aviation chart for the last few days exploring what is possible to do using just opensource software in this case QGIS mixed with a little bit of Inkscape. I am very happy until now with the results but I had some issues with some label things I wanted to do, specifically add a halo (white border) around text to enhance readability.
Fortunately QGIS supports to render as HTML and you can include CSS style, here is just a quick example

I will continue to explore this possibility further as I think this will provide a good basis to other things that I want to tweak in the sample chart. Hopefully I can blog more about the results.
